故事結構簡單, 主要圍繞著一條主線- Tony 大難不死後, 令他不禁反思武器的意義, 因而與公司夥伴Obadiah Stane(Jeff Bridges飾)產生分歧. Tony 其後在公司秘書Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow 飾)的協助下, 得悉他被俘虜的內幕.
儘管主線平平無奇, 電影卻仍大受歡迎, 旨因其支線出色:
支線1: 鋼鐵裝的設計、升級和測試
當Tony 設計出第一代鋼鐵裝時, 不禁讓筆者想起 RoboCop 機器戰警(1987)中極陽春的造型. 整套電影花費了很多時間著墨在Tony 製作鋼鐵裝, 儘管過程中歷經不同的失敗, 但他仍不斷鑽研, 直到升級至最終戰鬥的第三代鋼鐵裝. 即使聰明如Tony, 在整個測試過程中仍循序漸進, 而非一蹴而就, 更易令觀眾信服. 另外, 當Tony帶起面罩那一刻, 鋼鐵裝的眼睛部分也隨之閃爍了一下, 讓觀眾更有代入感, 彷如身歷其中.

支線2: Tony 和 Pepper 的關係
只有Pepper 能隨時進入Tony 的工作室, 可見Tony 對她的信任程度, 而且當公司夥伴和好友都質疑Tony 的決定時, 只有她不會. 此外, Pepper 也從不忤逆Stark的要求, 她唯一的一次拒絕是基於Tony 的性命安危, 但最終仍是會屈服. 但兩人的關係僅止於上司、下屬嗎?
兩人之間的感情是值得玩味的, 天不怕, 地不怕的Tony 做任何事都是秒速決定的, 唯獨在天台那幕戲, 他的猶豫是比女方的更甚. 另外, 兩者在稱謂上的變化也很有趣, 在日常生活或是生死存亡關頭上, 兩者都是以Tony/Pepper 互相稱呼, 但片中開首和結尾卻出現了2次Mr. Stark /Ms Potts 相稱的片段, 值得讓觀眾細味: 「曖昧總是讓人受盡委屈」. (不, 曖昧是戀愛最有趣的一部分.)
除了支線出色外, 電影的成功最重要因素: Robert Downey Jr. 的演技
Tony 飛揚跋扈, 風流, 自我, 自信, 完全不把其他人當成一回事. 這正正造就了他不屈服於武裝分子的傲氣; 實驗時, 飛上高空萬里, 仍是全然不顧自己生命的大膽. 正是這種目空一切的態度深深地吸引了觀眾.
當Tony 知道被人出賣時, 定格的神情和他跟人相處時, 咄咄逼人的目光亦是十分自然.
其中2場記者會的表現亦是令人非常深刻:
- 開首的記者會Tony 坐在講台前, 脫序地演出, 未跟任何人商量之下就決定要關閉公司最賺錢的業務-武器製造部, 只因「他」知道「他」的武器落到「他」不允許的地方, 殺了「他」想保護的人, 而激發出他的一股傲氣.
- 結尾的記者會Tony 勇於承認: 我是鋼鐵人 亦突顯了他的無懼, 張揚
Robert 的演技正正讓觀眾相信如果世界上真的出現了Tony Stark, 就該是這等模樣, 當一個演員可以把角色演得無人可取代時, 就代表了演員的成功.
而片中亦有不少名場面是Robert 臨時即興的演出(包括了2場記者會), 而有一幕其實是不連戲的, 卻讓筆者感到相當好笑: 當Pepper 把新的Arc reactor (胸口的反應爐)連接到Tony 的身體時, Tony 突然大叫了一聲, 把Pepper 真的嚇了一跳!
儘管電影在各方面都不錯, 但在情節、對白、畫面、動作設計上都有一些小瑕疵:
- 開首飛彈近距離在Tony 身前爆炸後, 他身上的衣服和褲子都接近完好無缺, 臉上亦只有幾條傷痕
- 武裝分子竟然任由Tony 和助手單獨製造極具破壞力的武器, 當發現不對勁時, 也沒有刻意搜查
- Tony 逃離山洞的戰鬥埸面不令人信服(武裝分子擁有大量先進武器都沒有用上)
- Ten rings 入侵手無縛雞之力的小村莊時, 就用上了小飛彈
- Tony 在拯救小村莊後, 離去時被坦克擊落(坦克通常是人手操作的, 而炮塔的空間限制了射擊角度, 基本上命中高速飛行物的機率是極低的, 而且鋼鐵裝的感應系統在此時也沒有作出提醒, 實難令人信服.)
- Major 少校在詢問Colonel 上校怎樣應對不知從何而來的飛行物不久後, 當上校指示要暫停攻擊, 他卻不聽上級指令, 堅持開火. (我以為軍人是要絕對服從上級命令的) 而且上校收到Tony 的電話後, 也沒有立即強硬下達暫停攻擊的命令.
- 軍火商把高端武器私下賣給武裝分子, 恐怕第一個找他麻煩是自家政府
作為Marvel 漫威宇宙第一階段第一部電影開始了結尾藏彩蛋的傳統: S.H.I.E.L.D 神盾局局長Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson飾)登場, 並埋下了Avenger 復仇者的伏線.
